Alum (potassium aluminum sulfate) is mainly used in painting as a fixative and binding agent. It has several areas of application, especially in traditional painting and in the production of paints and painting grounds:
Priming canvases:
Alum is often used in the pretreatment of canvases to harden and seal the surface. It helps to stabilize the painting ground and prevents paints from penetrating too deeply into the fabric.
Fixing colors:
In watercolor or ink painting, alum can help to fix the pigments on the painting surface so that they do not run or fade. It is used in paper processing so that the paint adheres better to the paper.
Production of tempera paints:
In the production of tempera paints, which are used with egg as a binding agent, alum can be added to improve the stability of the mixture and control drying.
Solidification of pigments:
In traditional dye production, for example for frescoes or inks, alum is used as a mordant to bind pigments and increase color brilliance.
Overall, alum improves the longevity and stability of paints and painting grounds and ensures an even color distribution.

It is particularly important to protect them from moisture, as otherwise they may clump together or change their properties.
