White beeswax is used in painting in various ways, especially as a binding agent, protective agent and texture giver. Here are its main areas of application:

Encaustic painting:
One of the oldest uses of beeswax is the encaustic technique, in which pigments are dissolved in molten wax and applied hot to the painting surface. Here, beeswax serves both as a binding agent for the pigments and as a carrier medium that creates a durable, water-repellent and shiny surface.

Protective layer and varnish:
White beeswax can be used as a protective layer on finished paintings, similar to a varnish. It protects the surface from dust and moisture and gives the painting a subtle shine. It is often mixed with other materials such as dammar resin to achieve a firm, polishable surface protection.

Painting medium for oil paints:
In oil painting, beeswax is used as an additive to give the paint more body, improve consistency and make the paint layers more flexible and matte. It also prevents the paint from "shrinking" when drying and reduces cracking.

Texturing and modeling:
Beeswax can also be used to give a painting a thicker texture. Artists add wax to their paints to achieve impasto and structural effects or to create moldable surfaces.

Conservation and restoration:
In the restoration of paintings, beeswax can be used to stabilize damaged or brittle paint layers. It can also be used as a filler for cracks or holes in the paint layer.

Overall, white beeswax is valued for its versatility, its protective properties and its ability to give paintings structure. It plays an important role especially in encaustic and oil painting.
