In painting, sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃ - also known as soda or washing soda) is mainly used as a cleaning agent and in some cases as a pH regulator. Here are some of its specific applications:
Cleaning painting utensils:
Sodium carbonate is often used for thorough cleaning of brushes, palettes and other tools. It helps to remove paint residues, especially from oily or greasy substances.
Removing old varnishes:
In restoration and conservation, a weak sodium carbonate solution can be used to remove old varnish layers or dirt from a painting without damaging the underlying paint layers.
Preparation of painting grounds:
In some cases, sodium carbonate can be used to degrease canvases or other painting grounds or to free them from impurities before priming. This improves the adhesion of the primer and the paints applied later.
pH regulator:
In certain techniques, such as the production of paints or gesso, sodium carbonate can be used to regulate the pH value. This prevents unwanted chemical reactions in the paint mixture and improves the stability of the materials.
Hazard labeling:

Signal word: Warning
H319: Causes serious eye irritation.

Our additives are mineral or simple chemical substances for which there is generally no minimum shelf life. When stored in a dry place and tightly sealed, they can usually be kept for many years. It is particularly important to protect them from moisture, as otherwise they may clump together or change their properties. You will find storage instructions in the respective product or safety data sheets.
In our online shop, we can only offer you some basic information about our products. If you would like to delve deeper into the world of plant dyes and expand or deepen your knowledge, we recommend our workshops at Hof Emschermündung or with one of our globally active dialogue partners.
That depends on the additive in question. We have compiled the most important information in general terms for you in the safety instructions on the respective product page. For a detailed overview of each additive, please refer to our product or safety data sheets. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us directly.
